Nearly half of all legislators score a “zero” on the environment

Raleigh, NC— A record 55 representatives and 24 senators failed to cast a single contested vote in favor of the environment in 2011, a reflection of the repeated attacks waged by the General Assembly on the state’s air, water, and open spaces last year.

Offshore Wind in the Atlantic

The Atlantic states are uniquely positioned to forge a clean, independent energy future. The region’s current dependence on fossil fuels has far-reaching and devastating impacts —– affecting residents’ health, draining their pocketbooks, causing air and water pollution, and warming the planet. Many Atlantic states have already become leaders in energy efficiency and renewable energy technologies that create jobs, lower energy costs, cut pollution, and reduce our reliance on dirty fossil fuels. These efforts will greatly benefit people and wildlife for generations to come.

It is time for Atlantic states to build on these successes by tapping one of the region’s most significant renewable resources: offshore wind.

Offshore wind for N.C.

North Carolina has more offshore wind potential than any other state.  In 2011 Environment North Carolina Research and Policy Center backed the creation of Gov. Bev Perdue’s Offshore Wind Task Force.  Using the influence of the more than 40 coastal businesses who’ve signed on to our campaign, our next step is turn this task force into tangible progress towards transforming North Carolina’s powerful winds into clean energy for its citizens.
