Raleigh, NC-- Environment North Carolina today announced its support for Larry Kissell in his effort to unseat incumbent Robin Hayes, noting Kissell’s commitment to alternative energy sources, and Hayes’s abysmal track record on the environment.
“Electing Larry Kissell is critical to building a pro-environment majority in Congress,” said Elizabeth Ouzts, state Director for Environment North Carolina.
Incumbent Congressman Robin Hayes earned a 23% on Environment North Carolina’s scorecard in 2008—a career high for the Congressman, who voted in favor of increased gas mileage standards and cutting subsidies for big oil only after narrowly escaping a loss to Kissell in 2006.
In 2007 and 2008, Congressman Hayes voted against funding research on global warming, against protection of the Tongass National Forest, in favor expanding drilling for oil off of the nation’s shores, and against requirements for green buildings in federal grants.
Kissell, by contrast, is committed to pursuing alternative forms of energy and phasing out the use of fossil fuels. He has made energy a major issue in both his 2006 and his 2008 campaigns.
“Larry Kissell is clearly the best choice for protecting North Carolina’s air, water, and open spaces, and breaking through Washington’s addiction to big oil and the polluter lobby,” concluded Ouzts.
