Raleigh, NC-- Environment North Carolina today announced its support for state Senator Kay Hagan in her bid for the U.S. Senate, citing her commitment to solving the country’s energy woes and her pro-environmental record.
“Kay Hagan has made a public commitment to move the United States toward a new energy future and away from a reliance on fossil fuels. She has made clean energy a top issue in her campaign,” said Elizabeth Ouzts, Director of Environment North Carolina.
Over her career as a state Senator, Hagan has voted with Environment North Carolina 81% of the time. Throughout her time in office, she has supported legislation to increase renewable energy and energy efficiency, cut pollution from coal-fired power plants, and protect North Carolina’s drinking water lakes.
Incumbent Senator Elizabeth Dole has voted against the environment almost as frequently as her opponent has voted for it. Though she was an original co-sponsor of comprehensive global warming legislation in the 110th Congress, she voted against raising gas mileage standards for automobiles four times and supported incentives for coal and other dirty forms of energy. Dole has 20% rating on Environment North Carolina’s scorecard.
“Far too often, Sen. Dole has voted to block the basic policies necessary to address the nation’s energy and environmental problems,” said Ouzts.
“Kay Hagan is clearly the best choice for protecting North Carolina’s air, water, and open spaces, and breaking through Washington’s addiction to big oil and the polluter lobby,” concluded Ouzts.
